Carmela’s stand up to Muscular Dystrophy
06 August 2021Courier Darren’s daughter was the proud receiver of the Inspirational Child 4-6 Years Award! Seven year old Carmela was presented with the award last month for her efforts to raise vital funds to fight Muscular Dystrophy.
Self-employed CitySprint courier, Darren Chillery-Watson has proudly announced that his seven-year-old daughter, Carmela, was the lucky receiver of the Inspirational Child 4-6 Years at this year’s WellChild awards. This comes a year after Darren was crowned Burton’s Biscuits Dad of the Year following his efforts and sacrifices during the pandemic. He has delivered vital PPE and Covid-19 tests for the NHS through the height of the pandemic, and selflessly slept in his van or shed for the first eight months to protect vulnerable daughter Carmela from the disease.
Carmela has Congenital Muscular Dystrophy, a condition that weakens skeletal and respiratory muscles and causes heart defects, plus deformities in the spine and joints. Through lockdown, Carmela made it her mission to raise vital funds to help cure herself and others like her – this involved multiple fundraising activities such as 2.6 mile marathon challenge in the garden, a London virtual WalkWithCarmela and a 30-day WonderWomanWalk, completing 300km with her mum, Lucy. Carmela has so far raised an outstanding total of £50,000 for Muscular Dystrophy UK, and she doesn’t plan on stopping there!
The WellChild award comes as Carmela’s second award for her fundraising efforts – the first being the Prime Minister’s Points of Light award. She has also been recognised as ‘my real Wonder girl’ by Gal Gadot, who plays Carmela’s favourite superhero, Wonder Woman!
