Trialling a new approach to supporting our charity partner, Make-A-Wish Foundation UK

03 October 2024

Over the last few months, we’ve been working closely with our corporate charity partner, Make-A-Wish UK, to look at how we can support them in granting as many wishes for critically ill children as possible.

We’re pleased to say that we have already trialled a brand-new approach to raising gifts for wishes with some excellent early results.

In late August, eight intrepid CitySprint colleagues from our operations and sales teams partook in a ‘Wishes are Waiting’ volunteering workshop. The workshop was attended by several CitySprint colleagues, with some of the Make-A-Wish (MAW) team also present. After a presentation and briefing from the MAW team, our honorary wish granters were given the tools and guidance to start hunting down the gifts needed to make those wishes happen.

On average, each wish granted by the charity costs £2,500. These costs are incurred in creating a bespoke experience for each child, whether organising hotel rooms, travel, equipment, gifts, and everything else in between needed to give a deserving child a memory they have asked for – and will never forget. Fundraising helps the charity massively but having volunteers who can speak to their network of customers, suppliers, colleagues, and friends to ask them to donate these gifts is also a huge help – and something that we can get involved in!

The team took on the task brilliantly and quickly started contacting their networks to ask for donations or discounts on a huge variety of items. Some of the items included a marine experience, spa days, a magical party, a spy adventure and more.

Ed, who is one of our Service Centre Managers, commented,

“As the day went on, the significance of what we were doing really hit home. Everyone felt very emotionally connected to the challenge and desperate to secure as many gifts as possible. It was a humbling experience and genuinely one of the best working days of my life – and I know the rest of our team felt the same.”

However, it was not just a one-day workshop, our volunteers now have a month to chase up any commitments from potential donors to turn them into ‘Gifts in Kind’. Once we secure that commitment, we pass the donor details to the MAW team to take them through the gift donation process.

We wanted to say a massive well done to our brilliant honorary wish granters and of course, the Make-A-Wish UK team for helping us achieve this.
